International Frappé Day is celebrated on October 7. This beloved and refreshing drink originates from Greece and has won hearts all over the world. It’s become an iconic symbol of Greek culture, summer, relaxation, and leisure and a tribute to the slower pace of life.

How did frappé come to be?

By pure chance in 1957. At a trade fair in Thessaloniki, Dimitris Vakondios, an employee of Nestlé, wanted to make his usual instant coffee. But since there was no hot water available, he mixed the coffee with cold water and ice cubes in a shaker. Voilà! The frappé was born.

Making it at home is easy

All you need is quality instant coffee, sugar, milk, and a handheld electric mixer. Start by mixing the coffee, sugar, and a small amount of cold water, then blend until thick and frothy. Add ice cubes and top up with cold water or milk (optional). Serve in a tall glass with a straw and enjoy!

Join us on a journey into Greek frappé bliss

Ideally, enjoy it in a Greek restaurant, taverna, or café where you can pay with your eStravenka card.

  • In Prague, try Souvlaki Bar, where you can enjoy not only frappé but also a variety of Greek delights. Think gyros, tzatziki, souvlaki, or the classic Greek salad choriatiki. For something sweet with your coffee, treat yourself to a slice of portokalopita — a traditional Greek orange cake served with yogurt.
  • In Brno, head to Taverna Athena, offering fresh and high-quality Greek cuisine — from salads and pita bread to gyros and other Mediterranean favorites. And yes, they serve frappé too, perfectly paired with a sweet treat.
  • Taverna Athina can be found in the center of Ústí nad Labem and at Děčín Castle. They serve homemade Greek dishes made from authentic Greek ingredients using family recipes. Along with a refreshing frappé, try their traditional moussaka, gyros in pita, or octopus with Greek potato salad ochtapodi me patatosalata.

We’ll leave you with a few handy Greek phrases you never know when they might come in useful! Ordering a frappé without sugar? Ask for it skétos. Prefer a regular sweetness? That’s métrios. If you like it sweet, say glykós. Want it with milk? That’s me gála. And if you’d rather skip the milk, go with horís gála.

So go ahead enjoy a taste of Greek comfort and sunshine, all with your convenient eStravenka card.
