The best mom cooks with ketchup …and the kids applaud
Zapiekanka is basically an open and baked sandwich that even a complete culinary beginner can prepare. If you’re looking for a dish that even kids will love, you’re in business. The original recipe calls for bread, cheese and sautéed mushrooms, topped with a generous dose of ketchup. And that’s a ‘must’: without ketchup, you might eat the baked bread, but not the Zapiekanka.
In addition to the kids, your colleagues will appreciate the Zapiekanka if you ever invite them to visit and don’t want to spend half a day in the kitchen for a snack. Plus, you can use what you have at home, the Zapiekanka is very ‘flexible’ and can take (almost) anything. Ingredients
- 1 long French bread
- Thin slices of ham or pork
- 2 cups mushrooms (quickly sautéed)
- Raw or cooked vegetables of your choice
- Mayonnaise
- 3 cups grated cheese (choose the one you like)
- Ketchup
- Chopped chives
How to do it
- Slice the long French bread in half (or thirds, depending on the length of the bread) and then split again horizontally to make 4 or 6 pieces.
- Layer the meat, quickly browned mushrooms, cheese and vegetables on the bread.
- Bake everything in a hot oven until the bread is crispy and the cheese is melted.
- Add mayonnaise (optional), ketchup (mandatory) and serve nice and hot.
